One of the worst things you can find in just about everything is fragrance. It might be listed on an ingredient list as perfume or parfum or sometimes an "essential oil blend." So what's so bad about fragrances? It's the fact that we don't even know what fragrances consist of.
The Safe Cosmetics organization states that the IFRA (International Fragrance Association) lists 3,059 materials that are being used in fragrance compounds. Among those 3,059 there are so many chemicals being used that are toxic, carcinogenic, and endocrine disruptors. Needless to say, many of these materials are also skin irritants and cause allergies from both skin and air contact.

So how can we still smell good? Let me tell you. I have a whole host of products I use now that smell AMAZING, because they're scented with essential oils. I know some of you are already on that train, and some of you are like "oh boy, don't go down that EO road..." You might be skeptical, but if you want a safe product that also smells good and is good for your skin, pure essential oils should be the source of the scent. I don't study every product to make sure every essential oil is organic, pure, and came straight from the leaf and extracted by hand or whatever the methods are. I honestly don't get into all of the EO research. I just know that if it's a pure essential oil without any added synthetics, you should be in better shape than using some questionable fragrance oils that are shadily unnamed.
I threw away all of my perfumes. I didn't have a lot of them, but I know they're expensive. So if you're still walking around wearing your Estee Lauder Pleasures or your Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue (one of my faves forever) or some Kate Spade perfume, here's my advice: if you're going to wear it, don't spray it directly on your skin. Spray it on your clothes so it's at least not being absorbed into your skin.
If you want to get rid of that stuff but need a perfume that is safe, let me introduce you to Ambre Blends. Their products are scented with organic pure oils, and I'm obsessed with the Ambre Essence blend.
They have a few different blends, but the brown one (Ambre Essence) is my favorite. They also make deodorants, room spritzers, and lotions in their scents. The reason these work so well and smell so strong is because the pure oils react with the heat in your body. I was told in the store where I bought it to use it inside of my elbows, behind my neck, or behind my knees - places that get the warmest and where my body heat would make the oil scents react.
I've been complimented on this "perfume" more times in public places than I can count. I highly recommend this stuff!
I hope you find a safe fragrance that you like, and next time you're looking at a "natural" product in any store or online - toss it if you see those words fragrance, parfum, or perfume!
